New healthy eating on a budget program in higher demand than ever
FEAST is a London-based organisation dedicated to addressing food inequality by turning surplus food into nutritious meals and offering educational programs that empower people to make healthier choices, even on a tight budget.
Since 2018, City Harvest, a non-profit organisation, has supported FEAST in delivering nearly 250,000 meals to those in need. These meals are prepared with and for local communities. Distributed to hostels, women’s refuges, and community centres, they ensure vulnerable people receive regular, healthy meals.
Caroline Monkhouse Flower, CEO of FEAST, describes how surplus food impacts communities: “We use surplus food and gather volunteers, including chefs, to cook in community centres, mental health day centres, and homeless shelters. This allows us to provide nutritious, regular meals for those we serve. We support elderly individuals and those experiencing homelessness, adapting to their different nutritional needs.”
Healthy Meals on a Budget:
To further combat food insecurity, FEAST introduced the Healthy Eating on a Budget program. Co-designed with service users, it teaches practical cooking skills, budgeting, and nutrition. This initiative not only boosts confidence but also empowers people to make healthier decisions, even with limited resources.
A Strong Partnership with City Harvest to Create Healthy Meals
The partnership between City Harvest and FEAST has been crucial to their mission. By delivering surplus food since 2018, City Harvest enables FEAST to repurpose ingredients that would otherwise be wasted. Together, they have provided almost 250,000 meals to vulnerable communities, playing a key role in promoting food security and sustainable, healthier lifestyles.
