Building healthier communities in south London

Initially responding to the pandemic, City Harvest community partner, Healthy Living Platform worked closely with Lambeth Council to create emergency food provisions for some of the most vulnerable communities across Lambeth. Since then, the organisation has faced subsequent challenges like the cost-of-living crisis. Each week, they receive around five tonnes of donated surplus food, distributing it to roughly 40 community groups, including residential groups, faith and ethnic groups, and specialist support groups.

Since their partnership began, City Harvest and Healthy Living Platform have worked tirelessly to support the most vulnerable members of society by providing essential food aid. Both non-profit organisations are committed to connecting people through food across neighbourhoods at a hyper-local level.

How does Healthy Living Platform?

Community Pantries

“We operate five community pantries across Lambeth—three in community spaces and two in children’s centres. These pantries offer a diverse range of fresh and healthy foods as well as long-life staples. For a small fee, community members can purchase a variety of fruits, vegetables, and pantry items, ensuring they have access to nutritious food. The pantries also serve as social hubs where people can enjoy affordable meals, tea, and coffee while connecting with others.” Says Carla Thomas, Co-Managing Director at Healthy Living Platform.

“A lot of the people that I’ve met over the two years I’ve been coming here, it’s a lifeline. It’s very fresh, healthy fruit and vegetables and very quality food as well. And there’s also a little cafe that you can get a hot meal for a pound, which helps a lot of people out” service user says.

Real Stories, Real Impact

The feedback from the community is heartwarming. Many individuals rely on Healthy Living Platform’s pantries as a lifeline, finding both physical sustenance and social connection. Access to fresh, healthy food has helped people improve their health, pay off bills, and re-engage with cooking. The organisation ensures that everyone is treated with compassion and dignity, helping them feel valued and proud to choose their own food, adds Carla.

Looking Ahead

As Healthy Living Platform continues to grow, it remains committed to its core mission: providing fresh, healthy food to those who need it most, fostering community connections, and advocating for sustainable and equitable food systems. By working together, the organisation aims to build healthier, more resilient communities.
