The New Normal
A City Harvest documentary on the reality of food poverty in London
Food brings people together and creates safe spaces for growth. However, alarming levels of food poverty, exacerbated by the pandemic and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, have transformed sporadic food insecurity into a daily reality for many Londoners.
The New Normal documentary shines a light on the urgent issue of food poverty in London, exploring the vital role of food redistribution and community organisations in supporting both the physical and mental health of Londoners during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. Presented by chef, food writer and broadcaster Melissa Thompson, the documentary follows the daily action at two incredible south London charities. It also incorporates expert voices from across the food system and charity network to highlight the causes and symptoms of food poverty in London and the immediate need for systemic change.

The New Normal Reviews
A powerful exploration of food poverty in London and the hidden networks that keep our communities going. Deeply necessary, beautifully made and profoundly important.
Understanding food poverty as a crisis that can truly impact anyone, it was beautiful to see the spotlight shine on those who, despite financial and resource constraints, bring opportunity and hope to people across London.
The film beautifully captures the social impact of food: how it connects communities, brings dignity, and transforms lives. A moving and important reminder of the role food plays far beyond the plate. Huge credit to the team for telling these stories with such care and impact.
