City Harvest opens its doors for The Big Help Out

For The Big Help Out on May 8th, City Harvest opened its doors as part of the Coronation efforts to encourage volunteering nationwide.
The charity’s Acton warehouse was a hive of activity. The food charity celebrated its existing community of volunteers and welcomed new ones to the surplus redistribution operation.
30% of the total turnout had never been to City Harvest, signing up to attend via The Big Help Out. Over 50% have already registered for regular volunteering at City Harvest since coming to our Acton Open Day.
The Big Help Out at City Harvest helped to attract new volunteers to the food charity as part of the Coronation efforts to encourage volunteering nationwide.
The event was an opportunity for our existing community of volunteers to be celebrated, and show the ropes to people interested in helping out their local community.
One such new volunteer was Steven Ziolkowski, who said:

“I came today because of a friend told me about City Harvest, and I thought it sounded great. It is a massive operation- I did think it was big, but not this big. It’s great to see the whole process, from where the food comes in, to how it gets processed and goes out to the charities. The team is also really nice. I would definitely come back to volunteer. They run different volunteering sessions, so whatever time I can afford to give in my week, I definitely will.”

According to our latest Volunteer Survey, 100% of our volunteers would recommend City Harvest as a volunteering experience

German news channel, ARD, featured City Harvest’s event as part of its Coronation coverage (5 mins 30 secs):

1 hour spent volunteering delivers 530 meals with City Harvest

City Harvest’s community of 500 volunteers help in the fight against food poverty and food waste. Every day, they sort and pack surplus food from across the UK food industry in our London warehouses. Did you know 9.5 million tonnes of good food is wasted by the UK food industry, while 25% of UK households face food insecurity? A City Harvest volunteer helps to bridge that gap.

For each hour spent volunteering, City Harvest delivers 530 meals worth of food to our 375+ London charity partners. This impact is demonstrated by City Harvest’s recently launched EQUALS campaign: www.cityharvest.org.uk/equals
