Big Give Christmas Challenge 2023:
Feed a London Child this Christmas
Supporting families with free food
Battersea-based Primary School, St Mary’s opens its doors to parents every Tuesday for a weekly food bank to support families and the school community who face food insecurity. Numbers have crept up since lockdown, signalling the continued need for the food bank to stay open. Associate Head Claire Mitchell and her team are there, come rain or shine, supporting families at St Mary’s.
The school has received surplus from City Harvest every week since September 2020.
The partnership was started because of an increased demand for food for vulnerable families, key workers’ children, and breakfast clubs throughout the pandemic. Whilst many thought demand for free food would drop after lockdown, school foodbanks are some of the busiest hubs of support for families and children facing food poverty.
City Harvest delivers free, nutritious food to 129 London community partners dedicated to feeding and supporting children and youth. That makes up 38% of the charity’s total community partners.
“City Harvest has been a real constant for us”
St Mary’s Associate Head Teacher, Claire Mitchell, said: “Our families always look forward to the weekly selection of both basics and more varied choices to help feed their families. Recent times have been tough for some – and the weekly support is a shining light to all those who access it. We can’t thank City Harvest enough.”
Big Give Christmas Challenge 2023: Feed A London Child
This winter, City Harvest aims to deliver 400,000 meals to children and families facing food poverty during the cold winter months. By rescuing surplus food and delivering it free of charge to frontline charities, and organisations such as Carney’s.
As the holiday season approaches, supporting City Harvest’s mission will get us closer to ensuring that no child goes to bed hungry. Together, we can turn the tide on food waste and food poverty, making a lasting impact on the lives of those who need it most. Donate now via the Big Give donate page to double the impact you can have on children facing food poverty.
