The Fruiterers take to the streets to support City Harvest

How do you like them apples?

The Worshipful Company of Fruiterers supported City Harvest at the Lord Mayor’s City Giving Day back in October.

The Fruiterers, including master Fruiterer George Beach, alongside Matt Hancock and Edward Velasco, gave out their British-grown apples at Guildhall and nearby City streets on the Lord Mayor’s City Giving Day. The proposition was a free apple with a chance of a donation to City Harvest. Either way, we celebrated their beautiful apples and our partnership for good. The Fruiterers are excellent supporters of our mission to reduce nutritious ‘waste’ at the farm gate and feed people in London facing food poverty. Watch them in action below!

City Harvest works with over 20 fresh produce partners to sustainably redistribute ‘waste’ from the farm gate and British packhouses. Many of our apple and top fruit donors are based in Kent, aptly named the Garden of England.

“The Worshipful Company of Fruiterers is my mother livery. I am honoured to be a part of the company, a nicer and more knowledgeable group of people you would be hard-pressed to find anywhere.” Sarah Calcutt, City Harvest CEO and Fruiterer.

The Livery Food Initiative

The Fruiterers form part of the Livery Food Initiative: a pan-Livery company initiative to collaborate to help tackle food poverty with City Harvest. The initiative has funded a food rescue van that is a symbol of the emergency we are facing in London.

History of the Livery Companies and City Harvest

During Lockdown, the Livery Companies supported people facing food poverty across London by making meals for City Harvest to distribute via the Livery Kitchen Initiative. The Livery Food Initiative continues the relationship by providing funding to keep City Harvest vans running.

What is City Giving Day?

City Giving Day is a simple but impactful initiative that enables City companies and employees to celebrate and showcase their philanthropic and volunteering achievements and encourage others to get involved.
